In recent years the Australian music landscape has seen quite a number of new independent festivals popping up. It's a trend that has been very well received—these mini festivals often feature line-ups and revelry that are notably against the grain, which in turn shed light upon the Australia's heavy weights, such as The Big Day Out and Homebake, as simply the music festival standard.
The Playground Weekender is one of the newest and most promising of these festivals. Over three nights—from Friday 9th March to Sunday 11th March—10,000 music lovers will be treated to more than just music. The Del Rio Riverside Resort in Wiseman’s Ferry, which is an hour north of Sydney, has never been used as a music venue but rather a veritable recreational park, with camping facilities, riverside chalets, golf, tennis and boating. Plus the Playgrounders will be bringing along an outdoor cinema, cabaret acts, cocktail bars, a healing area, food and market stalls, fancy dress parade and a “host of surprises”. Self alleged as a “boutique” festival, the Playground Weekender certainly won’t be your average music festival.

And then there’s there are the bands… Elbow, The Dears, !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Fat Freddies Drop, The Presets and plenty more. It seems the selection process was purely on live performance standards, as each headliner has a notable and proven track record on the international stage. All-the-while they are a selection of the more interesting acts the world has to offer—the inadvertent headliners.
